"In recent years, there has been a nascent movement of designers acting on their own initiative to solve problematic urban situations, creating new opportunities and amenities for the public. Provisional, improvisational, guerrilla, unsolicited, tactical, temporary, informal, unplanned, participatory, open-source—these are just a few of the words that have been used to describe this growing body of work. Spontaneous Interventions will frame an archive of compelling, actionable strategies, ranging from urban farms to guerilla bike lanes, temporary architecture to poster campaigns, urban navigation apps to crowdsourced city planning. As a project manager I've been working with Cathy Lang Ho, Mimi Zeiger, and Anne Guiney and Brendan Crain at the Institute on cataloging instances of informal and 'tactical' urban design intervention across the country. In the coming weeks and months we'll be selecting projects to highlight in different ways in Venice and working with designers, artists and curators to realize the pavilion. A full, free-standing webpage with lots more info and an interactive blog platform is coming soon. In the meantime, check out http://www.ifud.org/venice/.
